Winnipeger

Winnipeg
Pembina Hwy
是down town 里有个cityplace
James Armstrong Richardson International Airport
Pembina Hwy

Winnipeg——

My Second Hometown

This is the place where I call my home;

Where the maple trees grow;

Where the prairie winds blow;

Where snow tops the mountains;

Where mountains of hopes reach the sky;

Where an ocean of kindness fills all hearts;

Where happiness flows like the water of a river;

Where love is a breath of fresh air;

Where compassion is as tall as the Douglas fir;

Where understanding is as deep as the Great Lake;

It seems that Winnipeg is the place of nowhere,

But Winnipeg is the place of everywhere!

Canada! Winnipeg! Our homeland! We love you and we are very proud to be Canadian!

——MingDi Zhao

【I am not a Winnipegger】

I am not a Winnipegger because I was born in China.

I am not a Winnipegger because I grew up in China.

I am not a Winnipegger because I was educated in China.

I am not a Winnipegger because I fell in love and got married in China.

I am not a Winnipegger because I became a mom in China.

I am not a Winnipegger because I never liked Winnipeg’s mosquitos;

I am not a Winnipegger because I never liked the Winnipeg’s 40 below winter days;

I am not a Winnipegger because it will take 3 years to upgrade a bridge in Winnipeg!

I am not a Winniepegger because It will take a couple of months to see a specialist if you are lucky!

However,

when I was visiting China, I could not wait to come back to Winnipeg;

When someone saying Winnipeg is too cold, I would say Winnipeg’s cold is not as bad as you thought;

When someone says Winnipeg has a lot of mosquitos, I would say it became so much better in the past few years, I hardly ever noticed any mosquitos in recent memory!

When someone says Winnipeg’s road is so bad, there are too many cracks, pot holes!, I would say, this will teach you how to drive! Edmonton is so much worse!

When people complains it takes so long to build a bridge, I would have said, you know what?This does test your patience!

When people complains it takes too long to see a doctor, I would have said, living a healthy life style, then you would not need to see a doctor, and save some tax payer’s money, then you can pay less taxes!

I do not know if I can call myself a Winnipegger or not;

But I do call Winnipeg home, home, sweet home;

My children always say we are from Winnipeg!

—— HuiLan

You are a Winnipegger

1. If you know Winnipeg has been crowned the Slurpee Capital of the World.

2. If you enjoy Slurpee even at 9:00 a.m. on a freezing January morning.

3. If you realize our Winnipeg Jets fans are the proudest (and loudest) hockey fans.

4. If you know “Longitudinal Centre of Canada – 96 degrees 48 minutes 35 seconds” is about 12 km east of Winnipeg on Trans-Canada Highway 1 – and the 20 Acres Centre of Canada Park with the “Little Canada” natural playground, picnic area, and open Wi-Fi network is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

5. If you’ve never been to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights – the first national museum located outside of the capital region, though you know it’s right at the Folks in Downtown.

6. If you have been to or/and know Banana Boat, BDI (Bridge Drive-In), Sargent Sundae, The Supreme Ice cream Shoppe, and Licks are Winnipeg’s long standing and best original non-franchise ice cream parlours.

7. If you recognize the two seasons in Winnipeg – Construction season and Winter.

8. If you know skating on The Red River Mutual Trail is possibly the only good thing about our long, cold winter.

9. If you know Winnipeggers take their trick-or-treating seriously and you have to buy a larger size for your Halloween costume as a kid because chances are, you’ll be wearing a parka underneath it.

10. If you know the mosquitos are BAD and you always seem to forget insect repellent.

11. The best burgers always come from an old-fashioned food stand like VJ’s Drive-In, Dairi-Wip, and Whistle Pig (closed now?), anyone?

12. If you know Downtown Winnipeg has an absurd amount of one-way streets and it might take a few loops, but you always get to your destination eventually.

13. If you heard Room 202 of the Fort Garry Hotel is seriously haunted – and even if it isn’t, you’re not going to be the one to find out either way.

14. If you know the city’s cycling routes and bus systems aren’t exactly elaborate – sometimes, the bus comes. Occasionally, it doesn’t. Sometimes, there is a bike lane. Often times, there isn’t.

15. Our homegrown hockey stars are treated like celebrities – If Jonathon Toews, OM (Captain of Chicago Blackhawks) returns home there will likely be a city-wide parade (they’ve already named a community centre after him, after all).

22. If you know once a Winnipegger, always a Winnipegger.

24. If you are told Portage and Main is called the windiest corner of Winnipeg.

25. If you learn on the shortest day of the year the sun rises at 8:24 AM and sets at 4:29 PM. On the longest day of the year the sun rises at 5:20 AM and sets at 9:41 PM.
